On September 8, a survey was sent out to the students of Dawson to decide what this year’s homecoming theme will be, and preparations are already being made for the dance, which will take place on September 27.
For weeks, the Upper School student council has been extensively working behind the scenes to make sure everything is perfect, including going through scenarios, decorations, timing, and importantly, theme planning. According to student council member Rider Neeb, discussions have not only been about the theme of the dance, but about the location of the dance. “We discussed whether homecoming would be held in the makerspace or the roof deck of the Innovation Center, and we are open to ideas from students.”
The process has not been without challenges. Neeb explained that disagreements between students had made some conversations heated during planning sessions. “Some people really wanted to do a Lego or a Star Wars theme, but others strongly disagreed,” He said. “At one point, the debate got so intense that some members left the room and protested by relinquishing their votes for the year.”
Students across the school have their own opinions about the final choices. When asked about the themes this year, Junior Devan Mcaddon expressed that the themes given to us lack originality. “They propose themes like these every year and nobody picks them, It’s time to switch it up a bit!” Others, however, expressed that a more minimalist theme would be a better option, like Junior Andre Mcduffie: “I think that we would be better off keeping it classic, a Lego theme would be too much,” He said nonchalantly.
With the voting for the theme in progress, you can feel the anticipation coursing through the hallways of the school. No matter the outcome, Homecoming will always be known to bring people together, like students from all grade levels, staff, and student council members for a night to remember.
