A poster is found on the door of the Learning Commons, displaying a picture of food in a take-out container that was left on a bookshelf. On it were inscribed the words, “Week One and We Already Have STRIKE ONE!”.
There is a policy in the Learning Commons revolving around food. Keep the area clean. If you bring food in, whether that be snacks from home, food from the vending machine, or lunch, make sure you are cleaning up after yourself. Three strikes and food will no longer be allowed in the Learning Commons.
Ms. Grant, the librarian, said she was a little bummed that we already have one strike so early into the school year.
Ms. Delaney, the other school librarian, implied similar, but both women said they were hopeful, with Ms. Delaney saying, “The LC has been very clean since that first Strike”.
A student said, “I think [the policy] is fair, it’s kinda just common sense.”
Some have shown upset with having to deal with others’ messes, the same student said, “I have come into the LC and gone to sit somewhere and found someone else’s food. Which is annoying because I have to clean it up. I don’t like having to clean up after people.” The Learning Commons is a shared space and we are all responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation. Being able to eat in the Learning Commons is a privilege that can and will be taken away if we don’t keep our spaces clean.
