Environmental Club is educating the Dawson community about new composting rules implemented by Western Disposal. The club will meet in the middle school during their flex time next week to inform the middle schoolers of the new composting rules to make our school more environmentally friendly.
Dawson’s composting company, Western Disposal, changed from accepting all compostable items to only food. However, Dawson’s community has not adapted to the change in our composting companies. Many teachers are worried in the community. Mr Friedmen stated “It would be great to see more students take responsibility for this issue in our community” Next stating “I think a good first step would be educating the community.”
The Environmental Club is aware of the issue and started to take action Following Mr. Friedman’s advice the club will meet with the middle school next week to inform them of the new composting rules. Many middle schoolers such as Brinley Cahil said “I think Dawson is an environmentally friendly school and we do compost” as well as many other middle schoolers. Hearing this from fellow community members ultimately led the environmental club to start with our middle school.
When meeting with Mr. Moore on the topic he commented “Dawson doesn’t have the staff to sort through the compost every day and the community needs to make sure only food goes in our the compost is contaminated” He also mentioned looking into switching composting companies Dawson works with.
The environmental club also plans on changing composting signs to say “Food Only” to make it more clear to the Dawson community what is acceptable to compost.
However, concerts rise throughout the school Mr. Shoeman said “Dawson used to be 0 waste school.” While Ms. Carter says “I have seen maintenance mix trash, recycling, and compost all into one bin.”
