During Halloween week, many fun activities were held, including the advisory door competition. This competition took place during Monday’s advisory, where advisories were tasked with creating the best-designed door that would later be judged by faculty members.
The winning advisory was Mr. Hannen’s, who created a fun and interactive photo cut-out of a witch that students could stick their heads through to get their photos taken. The design incorporated all colors of construction paper offered, with specific details including a broom, hat, cauldron, and even a little pumpkin the witch is holding. There is even a sticky note that details where one should place their face to get their photo taken. All pieces of the design come together nicely to make the witch.
One student in the winning advisory, Scar Kohler (‘26), detailed their strategy to victory. Scar said that they “went with a more tactical approach, making it so that it could be something you could interact with” because they “thought it would be more fun than just a design.” Scar also explained that “teamwork makes the dreamwork,” detailing how they “each had [their] own tasks to do,” which helped it all feel “cohesive.”
But designing a competition like this requires a lot of planning, as expressed by Ms. Goldberg, the upper school advisory coordinator. When they were ordering the construction paper, she dramatically proclaimed how they had to be “specifically in Halloween colors that were the same consistency so that no one had an unfair advantage.” When asked if she thought it went well, she said that “it definitely depends on the culture of your advisory, but I think all the doors look great in Henderson Hall.”
